The success of failure

You collected your thoughts – you made a choice – you set a goal – you formulated a plan – and you failed. Now what? Give up? Move on? Forget your dreams? Believe you were never really going to succeed anyway? Hell no!

You may not have achieved the success you planned for – but the whole experience is not a failure. There is some good to come out of the mess. There is some success here!

Every experience, good and bad, influences your future decisions, goals, and plans. There is something to be valued in every failure – the lesson learned – the risk taken – the wisdom gained from trying. The resulting failure is not the end. The failing result is simply a sign that you are not done yet. Failure happens to everyone - every single one of us.  That’s it – if you failed then you simply are not done yet. The failure is a bump in the road to success – not the end of the road.

Planning to achieve goals

We know thoughts are the catalysts that spark decisions. We know we guide our lives by making decisions. We know goals are the stepping stones we follow in order to bring our decisions to reality. What we need to talk about now is how we get along the path from one stepping stone to the next. Plans are the map from one stepping stone to the next that we follow to achieve our goals. Plans detail the actions we are going to take that truly turn choices we make into reality in our lives. We have been taught to “plan our work and work our plan” but we’ve never been taught how to plan. It is not enough to set a goal and hope to achieve it – we must plan to achieve it and work our plan or we have only failure in our future. We wouldn’t be here if we wanted a future of failure – so – let’s get to planning.

Start with what you can control

How often have you thought about doing something – but never got beyond the “thinking” about it stage? Do you think about writing a book – getting out of debt – improving the environment? What stopped you? If you’re anything like most of us one of the biggest factors holding you back is that you are concerned with what others are going to think. You are afraid someone is going to think your idea is stupid. Or you might be concerned that someone is going to think you could never actually accomplish that big goal anyway – why waste your time and effort trying? Maybe you are concerned that you will fail and you will be embarrassed by that failure.

Most people say out loud they really don’t care what other people think – but on the inside – they care, they care a lot. This is normal. It is normal to care what other people think of you. It is normal to want people to like you and see you for the awesome person you are. It is normal to want everyone to think your idea is a great idea. You are normal. Now you know you are perfectly normal for caring what others think of you – stop. That’s right – stop letting any concerns you have with other people’s opinions limit the action you take in life. Don’t judge your ideas based on what someone else thinks. Judge your ideas by what you think. Get started chasing what you want – start with what you can control.

Your power is in your choice

In order to create a calm and peaceful existence you must make a choice to do so.

In order to be successful you must make a choice to be so.

In order to be financially secure you must make a choice to be so.

In order to do or be anything, anything at all, you must decide you will do it or be it.

Decisions – the choices in life that make us who we are. The greatest strength we have is our ability to make a choice. It is an unbelievable power and each of us possesses it equally. No matter your circumstances in life you have a choice. Even not making a choice is a decision in itself. Decisions, or choices, are the catalyst for all other things. A decision is the spark that sets everything else in motion. Our ability to make a choice cannot be overstated – it is that great!
