About Aimee

When your spouse, friends, and business partner have ADHD, you quickly learn a lot about the common strengths and struggles that come along with the diagnosis. I want to help others move from a place of frustration to acceptance (and appreciation!) of living with someone who has ADHD. Because of my own identity and experiences, I am especially interested in working with couples impacted by ADHD and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. I also welcome those who are in “nontraditional” relationship configurations and dynamics (such as poly, non-monogamous, and kink).

Therapy Style

I work from a Family Systems framework because no one lives in a vacuum. We’re all impacted by our relationships with family, friends, coworkers, culture, and the communities in which we live. In sessions, we take a look at how you experience these relationships and how this impacts whatever has brought you into therapy. I use concrete and research-based strategies to help clients address their concerns including: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing,  Gottman Method, and Internal Family Systems.

Quick Facts About Me: I’m a cisgender, lesbian therapist and have lived many of the same struggles that bring clients into counseling: coming to terms with my own experience of anxiety and depression, the never ending process of coming out in the south, having a partner who has ADHD…and the list goes on. One of my favorite aspects of being a therapist is combining my counseling education and training with tidbits of my own life experiences in a way that allows me to help others create a new understanding of their own experiences.

You’ve probably seen those therapists on TV: they’re wearing a suit, smiling and nodding, and seeming to mask their personality. You won’t find that approach in sessions with me. I bring my personality into sessions, giving straightforward and thoughtful feedback to help clients address the issues that are important to them. You also won’t see that dress code in sessions with me; instead, you will find me in casual clothes with a few tattoos peeking out here and there. I want my sessions to be a place where we both feel welcome to be our authentic selves.

When I’m not in session, I can usually be found reading a book (historical fiction or time travel with a strong female lead), binge-watching some TV series, playing table top games with friends, crafting, or headed to a local brewery.

Background

Since 2007, I have worked in a variety of therapeutic settings across NC: in group homes with teens on the spectrum and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, residential juvenile justice facilities, a community center for domestic violence and sexual assault, in-home therapy with families in crisis, and outpatient therapy with children, teens, adults, couples, and families. I earned my Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling in 2012 from Capella University’s CACREP accredited program.

I am licensed by the North Carolina Board of Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors (LCMHC #10252) and recognized as a National Certified Counselor (#284492). I have been certified by the South Carolina Board of Examiners as a Registered Telehealth Provider for clients located in South Carolina (SC Reg # TLC 90 PC).

I am also a member of and Membership Committee Chairperson for the Charlotte Trans Health Group.
