About Kim

My path through pharmacy and education allows me to employ my skills in science, use my artistic abilities in crafting an optimal medical and lifestyle plan, and advocate for patients. My overall goal in practice is to develop a rapport with my patients and their caregivers to understand their needs and concerns. I want to help empower individuals to become their own advocates and take responsibility for their own well-being. This is only possible when someone develops confidence in their knowledge to better understand how to contribute to, and commit to implementing, their own plan.

Specialties

► Optimizing medication regimens
► Detection of drug-related problems and drug-induced diseases
► Dietary and exercise education as part of a holistic treatment plan for chronic disease states or conditions (weight management, diabetes, cholesterol, high blood pressure)
► Evaluation of medication appropriateness

► Geriatric pharmacotherapy
► Evaluation of medical literature

Therapy Style

My patient care model is well-explained by the newly described Pharmacy Patient Care Process. This model combines the practice of pharmaceutical care as defined by Hepler and Strand in the 1990s with the standard of a team-based approach in the healthcare system. For each patient encounter, I evaluate medication appropriateness (medication choice, dose, safety and tolerability), recent research and guideline based best practices, the patient’s ability and willingness to adhere to a prescribed therapy (cost, acquisition, understanding, goals, etc), and other factors which may impact the optimization of health and wellness. Additionally, I educate patients and families on how to improve nutrition and activity levels.

As all patients and situations vary, someone may need only one visit for improvement in their medication and lifestyle plan, while others require a more intense, stepwise approach for reaching goals. No matter the degree of need at the time, we all experience life and health changes; what works well for you today may not be optimal in the future. Ongoing reassessment of health and lifestyle needs will improve the ability to identify needs before they can become problems.

Background

As a teenager, I was intensely interested in arts, sciences, and humanities. Though I knew not how, I desired to help create a world in which people would be able to live a full and genuine life. I developed a passion for improving all aspects of the human condition and experience.

Staying true to all of these interests, I started working in pharmacies at the age of 16 and knew I had found my path in life. I graduated from Campbell University School of Pharmacy in 2008 with a Doctorate in Pharmacy degree. The next two years would be spent completing general practice and geriatric specialty pharmacy residencies. During residency, I also became a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist. Recently, I became a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist and licensed as a Clinical Pharmacy Practitioner. Since completion of postdoctoral training, I have worked as a professor at the Wingate University School of Pharmacy. In my clinical practice at a family medicine clinic, I work on a daily basis to help patients, caregivers, and other members of the healthcare team to develop a holistic, evidence-based, and patient specific treatment plan.

It is through my personal experiences, interactions, and service activities that I have gained a deeper understanding of mental and behavioral health conditions.
