About Cindy
I believe that everyone, regardless of background or current situation, deserves the opportunity to receive support to make positive changes in their lives. Since 2006, I have been working in community mental health and have discovered a passion for working with and on behalf of individuals impacted by trauma. Everyone experiences trauma at varying degrees, but many of us don’t realize the significant impact traumatic experiences can have on overall development and functioning. All of us are complex beings who are affected differently by every (positive and negative) experience we have. I want to help others solve that “puzzle” of experiences and help connect the dots between how each facet of our personalities are interrelated.

Therapy Style
My number one priority when providing individual therapy is to provide an environment where an individual feels comfortable and safe. Therapy can often be a difficult journey on which to embark, and I believe part of my responsibility as a clinician is to ensure I am helping to ease anxieties and tension about the therapeutic process along the way. As an out lesbian therapist, I want to extend that “safe space” mentality to individuals from all backgrounds and subcultures and ensure that your therapy experience can be a time when just being honest and being “yourself” is always okay. I often use a combination of trauma-focused and family systems framework in sessions, operating under the understanding that our experiences from our past play a large role in our functioning today. I always want to help people get to the root of understanding the “why” behind a behavior or emotion before diving into attempting to “fix” something that is perceived as being wrong. I work to get to know how each of my clients likes to learn and what types of activity they need to get the most out of our work together. Not everyone enjoys or benefits from “talk therapy”, so I incorporate art, games, music, videos, and other mediums into sessions to allow people to have different experiences. Most importantly, regardless of what a person is coming into therapy to work on, I believe that the client is in charge of their journey and that our relationship is a partnership. I welcome feedback from all my clients about their experiences in therapy because my number one goal is to make sure my clients feel like our sessions are beneficial and important to them.
Background
As a teenager I decided I wanted to be a teacher, and I followed that path all the way through college, receiving my Undergraduate Degree in Health and Exercise Science with a minor in Education in 2001. After spending four years in a public school system in Virginia, I decided that teaching and the state of Virginia were no longer the best path for me. Through a completely random set of events, I found myself living in Charlotte working in community mental health. In 2013, I completed my Masters in Social Work at Winthrop University. Since 2006 I have gained professional experience working directly with children and families experiencing crisis situations related to mental health, abuse, neglect, and juvenile delinquency issues; providing training to other mental health professionals working with this same population; and in quality assurance and quality improvement for two large Medicaid-funded mental health agencies. I have had the privilege of presenting at local and national conferences, mostly on the topic of trauma. In 2015 my wife and I were married, and instead of becoming parents to a human child, we decided to focus all of our attention on our four-legged children (who are completely spoiled and totally run our household).
